Examples of extravagant expenses using federal money include the cost of a $2500 bathtub that was added to a painting bill, which itself was three times higher than the market rate for the job. In another case, a home renovated with federal money was sold to a city employee at a discount of almost $40,000, and the loan it was financed with was at a discounted interest rate and required zero down payment. In another case, the homeowner of a renovated home where a total of $43,000 of federal money was spent alleges that the job was shoddy.
